New Mexico is one step away from mandating that every private employer provide paid sick leave for workers.
A senate committee advanced House Bill 20 on a party-line vote yesterday sending the bill, which has the governor’s support, to the full Senate for final action.
Cannabis legalization, another legislative priority, took a brief step back yesterday after the Senate Judiciary Committee first scheduled only a Republican legalization bill for a hearing, then withdrew it from the agenda without any action on either the House Democratic or Senate Republican versions. Chairman Joseph Cervantes told reporters they would hear the Democratic bill this week but he expected it to undergo changes in his committee. Watch that committee and this space. Time is running out and anything could happen.
Speaking of things to watch:
- Mayor Tim Keller shared his state of the city address on YouTube yesterday. You can watch it here.
- Deb Haaland’s Senate confirmation vote is expected to come when the US Senate convenes around 3:00 pm local time. Watch on C-Span or online.
Once Haaland is confirmed, she can resign her Congressional seat anytime. Then, Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver will have to call a special election for sometime in late-May or June.
Candidates are already lined-up to fight it out for the open congressional seat. The newest candidate: Sen. Mark Moores who is ranked as one of the most conservative members of the state legislature. He has been widely rumored to be considering a run for governor in 2022 so his foray into the congressional race as a Republican in a heavily Democratic district may just be a toe test for that bigger race in 2022.
