‘I Stand Proud and I Know I Belong’
As you know, dear reader, this month is Black History Month.
That’s why I handed the keys of The Paper. to one of my favorite community members: Cathryn McGill, the founder and director of the New Mexico Black Leadership Council. When I asked Cathryn to take the reins, she noted that while we all know February as Black History Month, it’s actually just American history.
That profound thought from her is exactly why I knew she was right for the job.
Each featured story for the rest of the month will come directly from a member of the council, from conception to final product.
This week, Cathryn shined the spotlight on what kids are up to these days, including what’s going on over at The Roots Summer Leadership Academy.
We also have the lowdown on a new taco and wing spot in Old Town that specializes in Indigenous soul food. Plus we have an important story from our sibling publication City Desk about how U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich filed legislation aimed at helping to prepare young people for skilled trade jobs.
Speaking of City Desk, they’re still cranking out stories and you should go put their website in your bookmarks, if you haven’t already.

Bonus: If you’ve ever wanted to be in a Cohen brothers movie, we’ve got the inside scoop on the next one coming to ABQ – and they want you!
As always, thank you for supporting local and independent journalism. You can also catch up on the previous week’s stories at abq.news.
