In the coming weeks and months, you are likely to notice some changes to this publication we call The Paper. Our current editor, Andy Lyman, is moving on. But don’t worry, he’s not going far. Ctrl+P Publications grew by leaps and bounds in 2024, absorbing a number of regional publications, many of which were on the verge of collapse, which would have resulted in “news deserts” in parts of central New Mexico. These new additions to our publishing family include City Desk ABQ, The Corrales Comment, The Independent, The Sandoval Signpost, The Santa Fe Reporter and New Mexico Political Report. Andy has already been pulling double duty as editor of The Paper. and City Desk. Now he’ll be overseeing both City Desk and the newly inherited Political Report, which covers statewide news.
Back here at The Paper. (the weekly that started it all), I’ll be taking over duties as editor. I have been in this business for almost 35 years. I was one of the first writers hired by The Paper. in the wake of Weekly Alibi’s demise. I was a founding contributor at that legendary newspaper (started in 1992) and served as its managing editor for many years. Now I’m taking over The Paper.
Our goal this year is to refocus The Paper. on what it was to begin with: a hyper-locally oriented arts, culture and events newspaper. We’re not ditching news entirely. With so many news organizations in our family now, we have a wealth of stories to choose from each week. But going forward, you will probably see fewer statewide, politically based, hard-news stories and more community-oriented news articles. You’ll also see an increased (and soon to be redesigned) community calendar around which our coverage will be based. Overall there will be more music, food, art, culture and business stories – all focussed directly on Albuquerque. Our stories will be designed to get you out and about, moving and shaking, involved and informed. If you’re doing something, making something, building something, changing something or just imagining something in the Albuquerque metro area, we want to know. Please submit to our community calendar if you’ve got an event, contact our editorial staff if you have a story idea or sign up for our weekly newsletter if you just wanna know where to go and what to do every week in this sunny city we call Albuquerque, Burque, The Q, The Duke City, Dirt City and – of course – home.
