Next Wednesday marks Juneteeth National Independence Day, commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S.
What plans do you have for your day off? The City of Albuquerque, Black Chamber of Commerce New Mexico, the Santa Fe Soul Festival and others around the state are marking the occasion with community festivities, parties, church services, a business summit and more. Below are a few of the Juneteeth events happening this year.
The Heights Summerfest is also happening this weekend, which is the first of three of Albuquerque’s FREE summer block parties featuring live music, vendors, and more.
We’re right in the middle of Pride Month and there are still tons of LGBTQ+ celebrations going on around town. So check out our Guide to Pride for a huge selection of some of these events. While you’re at it, send us your best pride photos, whether they’re from the parade or a party, and we might publish them in a future issue!
If you’re looking to just create a weekend adventure of your own, The Paper.’s events calendar is the largest in ABQ with 1,101+ arts, music, community and family things do to in June alone.

Albuquerque’s Summerfest season kicks of with Heights Summerfest. These popular City of Albuquerque-sponsored block parties heat up neighborhoods around the Duke City (the Heights, Nob Hill, Westside) over the sweltering summer months. This first one features local vendors, kids’ activities, food trucks, libations from area breweries and loads of entertainment. Albuquerque bands The NOMS, Alex Maryol and Red Light Cameras will play on the main stage starting at 5 p.m. The national headliners, reggae legend Bob Marley’s original backing band The Wailers, will go on at 8:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
