Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and we know you were already planning on showering the mom figure in your life with love, appreciation and breakfast in bed (but not too early, let her snooze a bit). To help you out, we’ve selected some stellar events happening around town that we think your mom will love — assuming that she hasn’t already been planning a day of solitude for herself on Sunday. So call your mom, your aunt, your grandma — whoever else fits the description — and get ready to take them out for a night on the town!
Also, in honor of May being Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we’re highlighting a concert by a ukulele master who happens to have been trained on the instrument by none other than his own mother — imagine that!
Whether or not you observe these particular holidays or just want to create a weekend adventure of your own, The Paper.’s events calendar is the largest in ABQ with 1,101 arts, music, community and family things do to in May alone.

FEATURED EVENT
Jake Shimabukuro @ the KiMo Theatre

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and AMP Concerts is celebrating with a concert by ukulele master and innovator Jake Shimabukuro. Born in Honolulu and initially taught by his mother, Shimabukuro is world-renowned for his fast and complex finger work. Over the years he has collaborated with the likes of Jimmy Buffett, Bette Midler, Willie Nelson, Ziggy Marley, Jack Johnson, Kenny Loggins and Alan Parsons. In 2021 he was nominated by President Joe Biden to be a member of the National Council on the Arts. On Friday, May 10 starting at 7:30pm, the barrier-breaking musician hits the stage at Albuquerque’s KiMo Theatre (423 Central Ave. NW). Tickets are $48 orchestra, $38 mezzanine and $28 balcony.
