Spring brings warmer weather and budding trees and flowers. It also signals the start of baseball season, and here in Albuquerque that means hundreds will flock to the Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park for peanuts, Cracker Jacks—and this year, fancy new lights.

This season Isotopes fans will have a better view of the game than ever before. The City of Albuquerque has installed a custom, state-of-the-art LED lighting system—designed by Musco’s Total Light Control System—at the Topes’ home stadium.

According to a press release, the lights will provide more uniform lighting throughout the park, improve visibility and minimize glare, making it easier for players and spectators to keep track of the ball.

In addition, the lighting system is equipped with color-changing RGB-U lights and light-to-sound synchronization technology, which will be used to produce vivid, colorful light shows with designated color themes throughout events.

The new system uses far less energy than what was previously being used at the ballpark, is under a 25-year warranty and is in compliance with Major League Baseball standards, according to team officials. There are already 50 Minor League and 16 Major League ballparks using the new light system.

Here’s some some other important information to know this season:

  • On April 20 and 21, Isotopes Park will host the sold-out Savannah Bananas “Banana Ball” game, a fast-paced and entertaining form of baseball where players wear kilts and stilts and do choreographed dances set to popular music. (Think the Harlem Globetrotters for baseball.)
  • Piggy Burgers, Hawaiian Barbecue Turkey Legs and a Vegetarian Fusion Bowl are a few of some of the new food items available at the stadium this season.
  • Make sure you brush up on some key things before you go. For example, cash is not accepted anywhere in the facility, but all major credit cards and some forms of digital payment are. Also, any bag larger than a wallet or a clutch must be see-through, or it will not be allowed into the stadium.

The Albuquerque Isotopes play their opening game this Friday at 6:35 pm against the El Paso Chihuahuas. Ticket information can be found here.
