Before Albuquerque Public Schools makes the final decision on hiring a new district head, they want to hear from the public about what qualities the hiring panel should look for.
“A key part of the process will be gathering input from families, employees, and other community members,” the district wrote in a news release on Tuesday. “APS Board of Education members will use that input as they evaluate applicants.”
APS launched an online survey on Tuesday which asks participants to rank important characteristics of a potential superintendent and includes questions such as “What one word best describes how you feel about Albuquerque Public Schools?” The survey will be available to the public through Nov. 22.
The search for a new district superintendent comes after current district head Scott Elder announced in June that he plans on stepping down when his contract is up next summer. The goal, APS officials say, is to fill Elder’s position by July 2024.
The job posting calls for candidates who are “committed to equity and anti-racism” and “understands and advocates for requirements of the New Mexico Martinez/Yazzie Consolidated Lawsuit.” The job posting also lists a salary ranging from $245,000 to $325,000, which is “subject to negotiation.”
In addition to the survey, APS is holding two events later this month where community members can share their opinions about what makes a good district superintendent.
