Cinematic Sisters
The IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts presents a Virtual Screening of Sisters Rising. The documentary, by filmmakers Willow O’Feral and Brad Heck, is the story of six Native American women fighting to restore personal and tribal sovereignty in the face of ongoing sexual violence against Indigenous women in the United States. Tag Team Theater
While we’re still a few months away from crowding together inside theaters, Albuquerque’s Adobe Theater is presenting its latest play in virtual format. This weekend, actors James Cady and Phillip J. Shortell trade off the lead role in Krapp’s Last Tape by Samuel Beckett. The short, one-act play has been referred to as one of Beckett’s “most personal works.” Cady starts it off on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 7:30pm and returns Saturday, Jan. 16 at 7:30pm. Shortell takes over on Friday, Jan. 15 at 7:30pm and Sunday, Jan. 17 at 2pm. Tickets for this virtual, online viewing are $8 each show. Memorial Garden
We live in a high desert climate, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have nice plants. Heck, even our cemeteries can be gardens. Need proof? Head on over to the historic Fairview Cemetery (700 Yale Blvd. SE) this Saturday, Jan. 16, at 1:30pm for a Xeric Planting Dedication. Fairview Cemetery is dedicating part of its grounds to a xeriscape demonstration garden. Come out for a free socially distanced planting ceremony, and stick around afterward to help spruce up the historic grounds by picking up trash that may have accumulated during the winter. (Devin D. Get Creative Again
After taking a bit of time off (I think you know why), Coffee + Creatives is back. Coffee + Creatives is an informal meetup group for creative and enterprising minds in and around Albuquerque. Artists, designers, filmmakers, writers, gallery owners, food truck/restaurant wizards, musicians or general creative entrepreneurs are all invited to join. If you’re looking for feedback on a problem or idea—like where to find funding for a project, how to negotiate leasing a space, or what kind of prices you should charge for your work—or have some hard-earned advice to share, this is the meeting of the minds for you. Although current health restrictions prevent members from hanging out and drinking coffee (or whatever) in person, the group will meet virtually via Zoom (and broadcast via Facebook Live) for the time being. Coffee + Creatives is scheduled to meet once per month and switch back to the biweekly schedule once it is safe to meet in person as a group again.
