Bernalillo County commissioners passed a new ordinance this week prohibiting street racing, drag racing and spectating at those events.
Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada sponsored the ordinance, which would make it illegal to street or drag race, perform “exhibition driving” such as fishtailing, (because it seems that’s a thing), or standing by and watching these races on any road or highway in the unincorporated areas of the county – outside the Albuquerque city limits.
In Albuquerque, APD has tried to crack down on street racing, even creating a special team to target racers in high trafficked areas of town. Street racing is still a problem that plagues the city, especially in the Southeast part of Central Ave.
The new county ordinance states that violation and conviction of this new ordinance is punishable by a maximum fee of $300, up to 90 days in jail, or both.
