The Hermits Peak fire started Saturday in the Santa Fe National Forest, propelled by large gusts of wind and dry heat. The fire was declared a wildfire after it spread outside of a prescribed burn on April 6. The fire is now burning in the Pecos Wilderness and is about 540 acres as of Sunday afternoon.

The San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office and other fire officials have issued a voluntary evacuation order for San Ignacio, Las Dispensas and Pendaries.

High winds and high fire danger is expected to continue throughout the state for the next few days.
