If you’re the kind of viewer who likes your motion pictures a little bit dirty, you’re in luck. The annual HUMP! Film Festival is back on tour, hitting 30 cities across North America and passing through Albuquerque’s Guild Cinema Thursday through Saturday, March 10-12. HUMP! is a festival of short erotic films curated by noted sex-advice columnist Dan Savage. The films shown at HUMP! are always a surprising mix. They can be hardcore, softcore, comedic, serious, animated, musical, whatever. The only thing they have in common is an interest in the sexual side of human nature and the fact that all HUMP! films are made “by real people, for real people.” Since 2005 the pro/am filmmakers and stars behind HUMP! haven’t afraid to put their ultimate turn-ons and craziest fantasies up on the screen for all to enjoy. HUMP! features people of all ages, shapes, colors, kinks, genders and sexual orientations, all united by their shared spirit of playful sex-positivity. Needless to say, this is an 18+ event (and you must show proof of vaccination to enter the theater). This year’s selection of films screens Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 6 and 8:15pm at the Guild (3405 Central Ave. NE). All screenings contain the same lineup of films. If, on the other hand, your taste in film runs toward the more experimental, Guild Cinema is also hosting Obstacle Illusion: Thollem/ACVilla’s Live A/V Tour in conjunction with Albuquerque’s Basement Films. Named after Thollem’s March release on Astral Spirits Records, Obstacle Illusion, this 67-minute audio-visual experience “plays with our personal and collective consciousness through visual and sonic allegories, riddles and recontextualizations.” Tholem is a perpetually traveling pianist, keyboardist and composer. Since 2008 ACVilla has lived as a peripatetic photographer, videographer and visual artist. Together the duo weave an aural and visual tapestry to dazzle the senses. Their show hits Guild Cinema at 3pm on Saturday March 12. Seats are $8.
Light It Up
Organizers of the Desert Light Film Festival have announced that this year’s 19th annual festival and competition will take place on Friday April 29 at the NMSU Alamogordo campus. This fest gives students an opportunity to showcase their work, compete for prizes and participate in seminars designed for young filmmakers. Desert Light is open to all New Mexico high school and middle school students, including students who attend public, private or charter schools, or who are home schooled. Standard categories include drama/comedy, animation, music video, documentary, experimental film and 30-second commercial. Films will be judged in either the high school or middle school division. First Place awards are $100 each. Honorable Mention awards are $50. A grand prize of $1,000 will be awarded to the film judged Best of Festival. The award comes in the form of a scholarship from NMSU Alamogordo, which can be used at the Alamogordo campus or the Las Cruces campus when the winning student attends college.
