Boasting an abundance of houseplants ready to purchase, quality coffee and studio space available to rent, Power Plant Coffee is a first of its kind in Albuquerque.
Founded by Tytianna Harris and Juan Jimenez, Power Plant Coffee is a community-oriented space that focuses on inclusivity and community engagement. “It’s pretty much a collective. There’s a lot of different things going on under one roof,” Jimenez said in an interview.
Harris noted that she bought the North Valley studio space without a greater plan but it was too good of a deal to pass up. Business partners Harris and Jimenez met through social media and soon met in person in August. The two shared a similar vision for what the space could be. Concept quickly turned to reality and by Jan. 15, Power Plant Coffee had opened its doors.
“We are community-oriented and just wanting to share our own vision and creative perspectives with Albuquerque and so far, I think it’s been well-received. A lot of people want to engage with the space and each business,” Harris said.
Along with serving all of the staples of a proper contemporary coffee shop, including Matcha and Chai Lattes, there’s also an impressive menu of fresh juices made by Harris. Before operating the studio space, Harris ran a mobile juice bar near Little Bear Coffee in Nob Hill with the intention of providing an underserved market in Albuquerque with an affordable option. “It’s hard to find fresh-pressed juice in Albuquerque and the area,” Harris said.
Now Harris’s juice business operates out of Power Plant Coffee. “We just want to create better access to healthier beverages and beverages that are coffee alternatives,” Harris said.
Both Harris and Jimenez have embraced the process of realizing Power Plant Coffee. “We’re looking into being here for a long time and it’ll be ever evolving. This is just phase one of what this is going to become,” Jimenez said. Along with operating the coffee shop, Jimenez is also looking to expand the small but productive nursery in the space, with a full-service retail nursery in the near future.
“Whether they want to throw galleries, host events, have social gatherings, that’s what we’re here to offer. We’re here to make a space more accessible to our community for whatever it is they have to do and just really push that there should be more POC owners,” Jimenez said.
Power Plant Coffee is located at 3719 Fourth St. NW and is open from 6am to 4pm Monday through Saturday and 9am to 3pm Sunday.
