Update: Albuquerque Police confirm one student is dead after a shooting happened at West Mesa High School Friday morning near the football field.

The student who was killed was identified as Andrew Burson, a 16-year-old student at West Mesa. He was shot during a dispute with another individual around 8:20 am outside the school. APD officers were dispatched to the school where they located Burson just east of the school property. Burson died at the scene as a result of his wounds.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate the shooting.

Public Education Secretary Kurt Steinhaus issued the following statement:

“When Superintendent Elder called, we immediately mobilized a team with Public Education Department and Department of Health staff to be on call to provide mental health and social supports to the impacted families and staff at West Mesa High School. We will continue to offer these supports for as long as needed. Every school in New Mexico has a safety plan, and we’re going to review those to make sure we are doing all we can to implement preventative measures .”
