For the first time since suffering a stroke in late January, today U.S. Senator Ben Ray Lujan personally appeared in an online video to provide an update on his recovery.
Saying the video was filmed “here at University of New Mexico Hospital,” Lujan appeared alongside two physicians who provided details about Lujan’s condition and treatment. “We did determine that medication would not be enough and Senator Lujan underwent decompressive surgery to relieve the pressure in his brain,” says Dr. Diana Greene-Chandos MD who is described in UNMH staff listings as a neurointensivist, vascular neurologist and neurologist.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. The outpouring of support from New Mexicans and folks all around the country gives me strength every day. Excited to get back to work. pic.twitter.com/qRH2JjLTpp

Lujan’s office has enforced a limited information policy about Lujan for weeks, leading to wide speculation about his condition and prospects for recovery. The video seems to put those concerns to rest. Lujan appears to show no outward signs of disability or impairment and closes the almost 6-minute video by speaking of his desire to get back to mountain biking and ranching and returning to service in Washington. He says that he is preparing to enter an in-patient rehabilitation program in “a few more weeks.”
