A Christmas Date

Adobe Theater gets into the general holiday mood with The Twelve Dates of Christmas. This one-woman show is written by Gina Hoben, directed by Lorri Layle Oliver and performed by award-winning local actress Merritt C. Glover. It follows one young actress’ humor-filled “quest for happy couplehood” through 12 months of holiday celebrations, from Christmas to Christmas. The show is viewable online using Broadway on Demand. Tickets are $8 at bit.ly/37csz7p. The show streams Friday, Dec. 18 and Saturday, Dec. 19 at 7:30pm and on Sunday, Dec. 20 at 2pm. New Mexico Xmas

Teatro Paraguas, Santa Fe’s contemporary Latino theater, presents A Musical Piñata for Christmas VIII on Friday, Dec. 18. This year’s virtual version features Alix Hudson and Paola Vengoechea-Martini’s short play, Home for the Holidays: Con Amor y Gozo, a Spanglish romp centered on Advent 2020. It streams live on Zoom starting at 7pm. Audiences are invited to stick around after the play for a “virtual gathering” featuring carols and holiday music. To register for the free Zoom link, go to teatroparaguas.org/a-musical-piata-for-christmasviii. (Devin D. O’Leary)

The Man in Red

Is it a satirical prank or a genuine happening? We’ll find out Saturday, Dec. 19 starting at 2pm when Sit on Satan’s Lap (allegedly) hits UNM’s Johnson Field. Organized by the Antlion Entertainment “Art” Collective (the same mysterious folks who—very briefly—installed that jokey Jeffrey Epstein memorial statue Downtown), the event invites people to “come sit safely on Satan’s Lap” and “tell him what you want for Xmas (from behind a safety barrier while wearing masks).” You can even get a photo of yourself and the not-so-jolly man in red. (Maybe.) Interested “participants” are encouraged to go to sitonsatanslap.com and donate $6.66 to Direct Relief, a (very real) charity supporting medical facilities throughout the world with protective gear to safeguard healthcare workers. Then just show up on Johnson Field at 2. You won’t be disappointed. (Would Satan lie to you?) No matter what, the money goes to a great cause. (Devin D. O’Leary)

Ghost of Christmas Present

Local “magician, mentalist and professional weirdo” Jordan Jonas conjures up some yuletide spirits with his newest online show Beyond the Veil on Dec. 19. Mind reading, telepathy and clairvoyance are just some of the talents Jonas promises to mystify audiences with during this event. Viewers are advised to have a deck of playing cards or tarot cards on hand. Join in on Zoom when the “doors” to the waiting room open, 15 minutes before showtime (7pm). Each ticket allows viewing on one device, so feel free to watch with a lockdown buddy. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased through eventbrite (bit.ly/381zcIy). (Devin D. O’Leary)

Down Home Christmas

Thanks to the fine folks at AMP Concerts, Joe West and his musical friends host “an evening of down home country Christmas cheer” on Dec. 23, starting at 7pm. The theatrical folk rocker and his band have made a tradition of putting together Joe West’s Christmas Special every year at various venues around town. The COVID pandemic has put a lid on in-person performing, but Joe and the gang are going virtual this year. Guests for the 2020 show include long time Johnny Cash pianist Earl Poole Ball, Sharon Gilchrist, Bill Hearne, Laurianne Fiorentino and Michael Kott, Duke City Hora, Felix “Gato Malo” Peralta, actor Rod Harrison and more! Tickets are free (although donations to the artists are heartily encouraged). You can secure them at bit.ly/3mdhpn0. The event streams live on the AMP Concerts’ Facebook page (business.facebook.com/pg/ampconcerts/videos/) and on YouTube (youtube.com/c/AMPConcerts). (Devin D. O’Leary)
