Good morning, today is Wednesday, September 8, 2021

A months-long campaign led by the Republican Party, fueled in part by the false narrative of widespread mail-in voter fraud in last year’s presidential election (remember the Arizona “audit” that was being run by the Cyber Ninjas?), has led to a wave of new voting laws that will effectively restrict access to the ballot for millions of Americans – especially for communities of color and disenfranchised populations. The GOP and its allies say that new voting access laws will increase election integrity (meaning they want their guys to win).

On Tuesday, Texas became the 19th state to crack down on voting access laws, shortening after dark voting hours (🤔 because it doesn’t get dark early in November). It’s yet another hard turn to the right the state has taken after enacting the harshest anti-abortion laws in the country last week.

Meanwhile, in New Mexico, absentee mail-in voting was expanded last year due to the pandemic, in addition to expanding online and automated voter registration in years prior. An island of blue, New Mexico continues to lead the way, enacting policies that ensure election integrity.

In other news, experts say sharks are headed for extinction.
