Adopt an Elder
The Navajo Nation has been hit particularly hard by the pandemic this year, and that greatly affects many of the traditional methods that artists and elders have to make a living. Adopt-A-Native-Elder is working to alleviate that. For 30 years this event was held in person, but this year the non-profit organization is holding a Virtual Rug Show this Thursday at 5pm. All of your purchases will help traditional Navajo Elders sell their artwork and earn income to buy food, firewood and feed their livestock. This event features cultural teachings on the significance of the rugs and weavings. A full 100 percent of the proceeds go to the artists. You can sign up at anelder.org. (Tierna Unruh-Enos)

On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe
The history of the American West would have to include at least a chapter on the legendary Harvey House chain of restaurants and hotels located at railroad stops throughout the Southwestern United States (and first founded in 1876). Several historic Harvey Houses operated in New Mexico, including the Belen Harvey House (now a museum) and the recently reopened Castañeda Hotel in Las Vegas. From Nov. 12 through 15 the 11th Annual Fred Harvey History Weekend offers all sorts of inside info on the groundbreaking business. This year the entire event takes place online and includes seven history lectures, a virtual Fred Harvey Foodie Dinner (you can cook along with the demo and dialogue about Harvey cuisine) and a live auction of Fred Harvey, ATSF and SW history memorabilia. The Classier Things, Plus Bikes
Everything tastes better on a bike. Just ask Lance Armstrong. (It’s a well-known fact that he always eats lunch on top of a bike—standard or stationary). This Saturday, Nov. 14, join your fellow dining cyclists on the ABQ Uncorked: Bike and Winery Tour. Routes Bicycle Tours and Rentals invites you to tour the Rio Grande River past local farms to meet up at the award-winning tasting room of Sheehan Winery for a tour of the grounds and wine tasting. Dance It Out
Gone are the days of attending a live theater performance. At least for this year. That said, the artists in our community still need our support; and, well, couldn’t we all use a bit of creative outlet? Perpendicular is an outdoor performance series that does just that. It’s an evening drive-in event put on by New Mexico Dance Company and features site-specific dance performances you can enjoy from the bubble of your car.
