Is it OK to start drinking for non-political reasons now? Asking for a friend. … Yeah, it’s been a heck of a week, so what does our weekend look like? Here’s how mine is shaping up. Feel free to follow along.
Every vote cast in an election should be counted. It seems silly that we even have to say this—but, ya know, 2020 and all. Given everything that’s happened this week (and is still happening), it might not be a bad time to remind ourselves how democracy works. Count Every Vote New Mexico is a non-partisan coalition of local organizations working to make sure that every eligible citizen has the right to vote, that every vote is counted and that winners will not be prematurely declared. In affiliation with the national group Protect the Results, the group is holding a virtual We the People Rally Friday, Nov. 6 from 5:50 to 6:30pm on Zoom (mobilize.us/ptr/event/350300/). New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver hosts the virtual rally. Speakers include Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller, Native American Alliance Education Project Executive Director Ahtza Dawn Chavez and NAACP NM President Joseph Cotton. This free, COVID-safe event sounds like a fine way to celebrate our rights as citizens of a democracy and to potentially close the book on a contentious week.
Despite being closed The Guild Cinema is still finding fun and entertaining ways to interact with customers. Each week, for example, the theater teams up with a local Nob Hill restaurant for some Friday and Saturday night Dinner and a Virtual Movie. Grab some takeout from this weekend’s food partner, Bistronomy B2B (b2babq.com), and stream one of more than 50 indie films available through Guild Cinema (guildcinema.com) from the comfort of your own home. I’ll be checking out Guild’s newest offering, Frederick Wiseman’s City Hall, a timely documentary illustrating efforts of the Boston city government to support its diverse community—from elder services to marriages, housing, racial justice initiatives and more. Be sure to tag both businesses on Facebook while you’re doing it to spread the word.
Although we didn’t get to experience the State Fair this year, thanks to our unwanted roommate COVID, we can still get a taste of it at the Cottonwood Fair Food Drive-Thru taking place at Cottonwood Mall parking lot this Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11:30am to 6:30pm. I’ll be swinging by on Saturday afternoon to stress eat my way through Funnel Cakes, Corn Dogs, Ribbon Fries, Lemonades, Smoked Turkey Legs and whatever else they’ve got.
