Despite Early Promises, Trump Fails to Make New Mexico Competitive
Just seconds after New Mexico’s polls were scheduled to close at 7:00 pm on Election Day, The New York Times and the Associated Press declared Joe Biden the winner of the presidential election in New Mexico.
According to the AP, by 7;00 PM Mountain Time, President Donald Trump has won Louisiana, Nebraska, Nebraska’s 3rd Congressional District, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming, while Democrat Joe Biden has won New Mexico and New York.
As early as September 2019, Donald Trump promised to make New Mexico competitive for his campaign and other Republicans.
“As we started doing polling there, we saw a dramatic increase from 2016 and I went over this with the president and he said, ‘Let’s go straight into Albuquerque,’” Parscale recalled in a 2019 story in Politico. By November 2020, Trump had failed to deliver on that ambitious goal.
While final results are not yet tabulated, a poll conducted by the Albuquerque Journal during the last week of October found that “54% of likely general election voters said they planned to or had already voted for Biden, while 42% said they support Trump.”
