It’s getting hotter in here. If you’ve ever told someone it felt like New Mexico was really showing the impacts of climate change, you’re right.

A new report says that not only is our climate warming, but the climate is also warming faster in New Mexico than in almost every other state. That’s just one of the startling findings from NOAA’s 10-year analysis of new “climate normals” our reporter Justin Schatz found.

That’s a big reason state regulators are pushing to expand regulations curbing oil and gas greenhouse gas emissions.

In the US Senate, New Mexico’s Martin Heinrich has championed efforts to restore methane emission rules and reduce HFC use which could curb future warming by as much as 2 degrees. And, of course, New Mexico’s own Deb Haaland is now in a position to implement a big part of President Biden’s ambitious national transition from fossil fuels to more sustainable sources. Maybe it’s no coincidence that a state among the first to see climate change is also full of leaders working to stop it.

In case you were wondering, today’s forecast high in ABQ is 83 degrees. That’s 7 degrees hotter than normal.
