The Play‘s the Thing
The University of New Mexico pulls back the curtain this weekend for the annual Linnell Festival of New Plays. The festival presents new theatrical work by MFA students in UNM’s Graduate Dramatic Writing Program and plays by undergraduate writers from UNM’s Department of Theatre and Dance. The festival kicks off on April 30 at 6:30pm with the premiere of The Bat, a full-length feature film scripted by graduating writer Shannon Flynn and directed by Erik Ehn. The festival continues April 30 through May 2. All events will be held online via Zoom webinars. All events are free, but donations are being accepted and will go to the UNM Theatre Program fund to support student success. You must register online to get the Zoom link of each event. Crime Time
Aux Dog Theatre returns to the Digital Stage with “the original true crime dram.” Arden of Feversham as part of its celebrated Shakespeare 505 Festival. The production, directed by Colin A. Borden and produced by Artistic Director Victoria J. Liberatori, will be available through VOD on April 30 and May 1 and 2. Arden of Feversham was written in 1592 by an unknown playwright (some say it was Shakespeare!) and tells the tragically comic tale of a philandering housewife who organizes the murder of her unsuspecting husband. Lies, greed, unrequited love and bumbling assassins abound. This modern adaptation trades 1592 London for 1982 Boston. Burqueños Alexandre Glover and Malcom Stokes lead the cast, which includes actors from Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas. Tickets ($10) are available now at auxdogtheatre2020.ticketspice.com/feversham. Bernalillo County presents the final El Camino Real Trade Fair of the spring season on April 30 and May 1. Join BernCo and its partners online at Facebook.com/ElCaminoRealTradeFair Friday night at 6:30pm and Saturday morning at 9am for a virtual time-traveling journey. There will be music, lectures and demos. Learn how to make adobe bricks, papel picado art, pueblo cherry pies and more. In addition you can learn about New Mexico’s history, from the story of the Matachinas dancers to the people who came here and helped make Albuquerque and Bernalillo County what it is today. Plant Powered
Come on down to the Chispas Farm Plant Sale and get plant starters for your garden. There are at least 1000 plants up for grabs, so bring a cardboard flat or box to help carry your plants home in. We’re talking tomatoes, cantaloupes, squash, eggplants, flowers, herbs and more. Admission is free. Plants in 4″ pots are $4.50 each. Buy five for $20 or 15 for $55. All the plants will be outside and spaced widely on tables. Folks are asked to please social distance and wear a mask at all times on the property. After you have selected your plants, you are welcome to explore the farm. Say hi to the goats, sheep, chickens, ducks and geese, and see how the field veggies are growing. Head Farmer Casey Holland will be on site to talk farm and advise about planting and growing your new starts. Gates open at 10:30pm on May 1 and things wind down at around 4pm. The Art of Compassion
In order to spread awareness and build their network of supporters, Rio Grande Borderland Ministries is hosting an online community art fundraiser titled Canvas of Hope. The event features artists passionate about migration and includes musical performances, poetry readings, artists talks and more. You can join Canvas of Hope May 1 from 1pm to 2:30pm on Zoom or Facebook Live. Registration is required. The auction went live on May 24 and will close at midnight on May 1. May the Fourth Be With You
It’s May the 4th, or as sci-fi fanatics know it: Star Wars Day. The Albuquerque Film + Music Experience has teamed up with Albuquerque Little Theatre to launch AFMX Drive-Ins, a string of classic outdoor movie screenings taking place in the Little Theatre parking lot (224 San Pasquale Ave. SW) throughout the summer. The series kicks off this Tuesday with, appropriately enough, 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV—A New Hope. The lot opens at 6:30pm. The movie starts at 8pm.
