Just Us
The Sanitary Tortilla Factory and the ACLU join forces for an online screening of Shontina Vernon’s powerful short film triptych “Grrrl Justice” on Oct. 22 starting at 7pm. By following three characters stuck at three very different places in the American criminal justice system, the film examines how traumatic backgrounds including family violence, racism, poverty, sexual abuse, homophobia, and transphobia attach young people to systems that criminalize them. Following the screening is an open conversation with “system-impacted folxs” and members of the ACLU Smart Justice team. Feminism + Film
Guild Cinema and 516 Arts bring the Feminist Border Film Festival to a computer near you. The festival is presented annually by New Mexico State University’s Gender & Sexuality Studies department and “celebrates the power of cinema as a creative platform for filmmakers and viewers to confront urgent social issues.” The festival features a selection of short films, including live-action narrative, documentary and animation—all of which explore gender, identity, race, sexuality, class, transnationality, migration, refugees, dis/ability and more. The presentation is tied to 516’s current Feminisms exhibit, and you can purchase $10 tickets—which will give you digital streaming access to all the films from Saturday, Oct. 24 to Sunday, Oct. 25—by going to 516arts.org/programs/events/film-festival-feminist-border-arts-film-festival. Maybe you’re undecided (seriously?), or maybe you’ve decided that Trump’s the man to get us through another four years of absolute insanity culminating in a total meltdown.
