Out Spoken
Downtown’s 516 Arts invites everyone to a night of poetry and spoken word in conjunction with the concurrent solo art exhibitions on view, “Afton Love: Perfect Union” and “The (Tense) Present: New Works by Neal Ambrose-Smith.” 516 WORDS: Mary Oishi, Joan Logghe, Levi Romero & Carmen Tafolla features four local poets performing works based around the theme of time, which is a common thread in both of the exhibitions. Flowers of the Valley
Carol Vigil and Leila Flores-Dueñas comprise a New Mexico women’s dueto, whose “smooth harmonies are reminiscent of the many hermanas duos that became famous during the 1960s.” They are known for their presentations about life along the U.S./Mexico border, covering topics such as the role of corridos (stories told in song) in Mexican and Southwestern music, soldaderas of the Mexican Revolution and women’s roles in Borderland music. The ladies are performing at 3rd Thursday: Las Flores Del Valle at the Albuquerque Museum on March 18. This musical program originates from inside the museum’s exhibition “Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism.” Rounding out the evening’s entertainment is poetry with Albuquerque Poet Laureate Jessica Helen Lopez and yoga with YogaZo. Spring Is in the Air
OT Circus (709 Central Ave. NW) is having a pop up “Spring Into Something Beautiful” event on March 20 from 4 to 8pm. According to organizers the inspiration behind this specially curated show includes: “growth, new life, flora, fauna, birds, bees and longer, brighter days ahead!” Spring-themed wall art from Louise Hamel Coleman, Shelly Barnett and Rachel Harvey is on display inside the OT Circus gallery. (Admission is limited and masks are required.) If you get stuck waiting outside, don’t worry: There are also outdoor vendors in the OT Circus parking lot as well as across the street at 718 Central Ave. The Munchie Truck food truck is set to vend out front, and local musician Gilbert Uribe (bass guitarist for popular local Latin band Nosotros) plays from 4 to 7pm, so there’s plenty to keep you entertained. Digital Drama
Theater is alive and well and streaming on the internet. Almost Adults LGBTQ+ Online Short Play Reading Series continues March 21 at 3:30pm. March’s selections include “Pretty Queer” by Emma Goldman-Sherman, “The Most Brave Girl in the Whole Wide World” by John Mabey, “A Moment of Clarity” by Philip Middletown Williams and “Davy and Stu” by Anton Dudley. This free event livestreams on the Almost Adults Facebook page, which can be found by searching @almostadultstheatre, or by joining on Zoom at us02web.zoom.us/j/86493879808. Stories at a Distance
Storytellers of New Mexico hosts another evening of personal storytelling on Zoom. March’s event is on the theme “Winds of Change: Celebrating Women’s History Month.” March is the beginning of the windy season in New Mexico, which can be both exciting and unsettling. So viewers/listeners on March 23, 7 to 9pm, are invited to a free evening of storytelling “celebrating the exciting and unsettling women in your life.” There are also open mic opportunities (up to five min each) if you have a personal story to share.
