EXCLUSIVE: After almost two years of teasing that he might, Sheriff Manny Gonzales officially filed paperwork this past week to become a candidate for mayor of Albuquerque. Keller is expected to file in a few days.
Previewing the upcoming filing season, The Paper. devoted two issues last month to the two men seen as most likely to face off in the city’s November 2021 election for mayor.

Nicholas Bevins, a 20-something Bernie activist also filed paperwork this week as did at least one candidate for city council in District 9, the seat being vacated with the retirement of Councilor Don Harris.
Odds are, Keller, Gonzales and Bevins won’t be the only ones to run for mayor and there will be a long list of city council candidates lining up at the city clerk’s door soon.
It’s a long way between here and November but it’s election season, again!

Chuck Schumer is beaming after an all-night vote-a-rama in the US Senate ended in passage of the $1.9 trillion federal COVID relief bill that includes a new round of $1,400 checks for most families and extended federal unemployment benefits through early September.
New Mexico’s Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Lujan both tweeted that they had stayed up all night and were proud to see the package pass.

Schumer also got in another surprise win: Instead of adjourning after the vote, Schumer went back to business after Republicans had filed out of the chamber and quickly passed a motion ending debate on the nominations of Merrick Garland for attorney general and Marsha Fudge for HUD. Slick move.
Schumer also says the Senate will try to take up the nomination of Deb Haaland for Interior next week alongside the others.
