Experiments in Cinema v20.0

Albuquerque’s home-brewed experimental film festival turns 20 years old! That’s two decades’ worth of importing cinematic filmscapes from around the globe and packing them into an annual collection of eyeball-bending, mind-expanding screenings, lectures, workshops and more. From Wednesday, April 16 to Sunday, April 20, Experiments in Cinema v20.0 brings the international community of “cinematic un-dependents” to Nob Hill’s Guild Cinema (3405 Central Ave. NW) to share their art. In addition to films from around the world (Argentina, Belgium and Croatia covers the ABCs), the festival includes special programs, lectures and live performances, with many filmmakers present for Q&A’s. General admission is $10 per day or $8 per day for students/seniors. For $40, you can score a full festival pass, good for all five days. Right in the Eye: A Live Movie-Concert Tribute to Georges Méliès

The three talented French musicians who make up alcoléa & cie are on tour across America right now and are coming to Albuquerque on Friday, April 18 to perform the live movie-concert Right in the Eye, composed of 12 films representative of the genius of silent film director Georges Méliès. Méliès was the pioneering French magician, actor, film director and inventor of special effects who led many technical and narrative developments in the early days of cinema. Described as “current, poetic and playful,” Alcoléa & cie provide live musical accompaniment to Monsieur Méliès’ fantastical, historical movie shorts. The audio-visual event gets rolling at KiMo Theatre (423 Central Ave. NW) starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 to $20. Kids under 18 are free. Grab ’em now at artsandculture.cabq.gov/8692/8693.
The Riddims Annual 420 Bash

Cannabis and reggae go together like chocolate and peanut butter (which itself pairs pretty well with cannabis, now that I think about it). Every year, local reggae purveyors The Riddims invite all and sundry to The Riddims Annual 420 Bash. The event is sponsored by High Desert Relief and takes place this year at Launchpad (618 Central Ave. SW) on Saturday, April 19 starting at 8 p.m. Aside from the headlining band, special musical guests include The Mango Cakes, Elovated Roots, Innastate and DJ Buddhafunk. All Chola, Two Stoned Betties and Own the Day are setting up a mini vending market. Plus, Cloudface and Blythe Mariano are there creating live art throughout the evening. This is a 21+ event. Ticket are $10 and can be purchased at the door or in advance at tickets.holdmyticket.com/tickets/446855.
