New Mexico has already proven to be fertile hiring grounds for President Joe Biden. He appointed former local Congresswomen Deb Haaland to lead the Department of Interior and then added Santa Fe lawyer Tanya Trujillo and former State Indian Affairs Secretary Lynn Trujillo to top posts in that department.

He picked Xochtil Torres Small, former Congresswoman for the old Southern New Mexico district, to serve in the number two spot in his Agriculture Department and former Senator Tom Udall is now Biden’s Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa. Dozens more New Mexicans serve in posts across agencies in DC and New Mexico.

So perhaps it is just natural that he would pick a Native New Mexico voter turnout guru to take a leading role in his reelection campaign.

Sara Schreiber, a native New Mexican and UNM graduate, was named chief of staff to the President’s campaign last week. Schreiber has most recently served as executive director of America Votes, a nonprofit national voter turnout and voting rights advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C. She previously served as communications director for Democratic Congressman Harry Teague from Hobbs.

“I am thrilled to welcome Sara to Team Biden-Harris,” said campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez. “We’ve been building a diverse, talented and dedicated team ready to reelect President Biden and Vice President Harris and Sara embodies the grit, experience, and relationships that are needed to reach and mobilize our coalition to win next November.”

Politics runs deep through Schreiber’s New Mexico connections. She is the daughter of former Lieutenant Governor and 2010 gubernatorial candidate Diane Denish and San Juan County rancher Don Schreiber, a well-known methane activist and public lands advocate. Her sister, Suzanne Schreiber, was elected to the Oklahoma State House of Representatives in 2022.
