The rise in gun-related violence has been on the uptick for the past decade in this country and specifically in this county. To celebrate National Gun Safety Month and National Gun Violence Awareness Day the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office and
New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence bring to the community Gun Safety Awareness Day, an event providing attendees with free gun locks, free food, a kids craft table, the raffling of two biometric gun safes and three gardening tools forged from guns.

There will be a live demonstration of guns being forged into garden tools as a repurposing effort and the dismantling of an AK-47 by a gun owner who is asking all owners of assault weapons to disarm them.

“The rise in gun-related crimes, specifically with juveniles, has risen at an alarming rate in
Bernalillo County. That’s why this event is so important, it’s a way for us to engage with the
public and the youth to spread awareness relating to gun safety,” said District Attorney Raul
Torrez. “There is no age limit when it comes to spreading knowledge about gun safety and we should be taking the time and effort to provide resources in more than one way for community members so that we can all be safer, healthier and happier. Thank you to the community partners involved in this important event. We hope to see you at our gun safety events throughout the month of June.”

Gun Safety Awareness Day will also hold education regarding gun safety for adults and children. Children will have the opportunity to participate in an art activity that illustrates the importance of practicing non-violence.

The event will also serve as an outlet to introduce the first annual Guns to Gardens National Buyback Day which will be on June 11th at La Mesa Presbyterian Church. The gun buyback event will allow members of the public to anonymously bring their unwanted guns which will later be forged into garden tools. Each attendee that brings an unwanted firearm will receive a gift card. More details on National Gun Buyback Day – Guns to Gardens to come in early June.
