A Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputy shot a man near Tesuque Wednesday morning. The shooting is the fourth in a string of officer-involved shootings (OIS) by officers in the county in just the last two weeks.

The most recent shooting happened at No. 1 Entrada Capulin, just off Bishop’s Lodge Road north of Santa Fe. The State Police, who are investigating the incident, released few details Wednesday except to say that a Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Deputy was involved and there were no injuries reported with any of the deputies involved in the shooting. Further updates have also not been issued, as the investigation is still in its preliminary stages.

This latest officer-involved comes right after another shooting on July 4, when State Police officers attempted to apprehend a man near the Rail Runner tracks off of I25 who was brandishing a firearm and fired at officers. The officers returned fire and shot the man, who was taken to a hospital with non-fatal injuries.

On June 24, Santa Fe County deputies shot another man inside the Santa Fe city limits. That man, the sheriff’s office says, was driving a stolen truck and pointed a handgun at deputies after a pursuit.

The day before, on June 23, city police shot a man near the historic downtown plaza after responding to a call of a man with a gun in a nearby park. The officers involved chased a suspect through downtown Santa Fe before fatally shooting the man. Police say the man and another woman, who has since been arrested, were involved in an armed altercation with another person in the park before police arrived.

In Southeast New Mexico, Roswell police shot a man on June 28 during a domestic violence call and Albuquerque police shot a man Monday after he fired on them as they attempted to apprehend a suspect who stole a city-owned “bait car.”

State Police routinely investigate all police-involved shootings outside of Bernalillo County. No further information on any of the shootings has been released by State Police.

Deputy shoots, kills man after fatal stabbing of mother

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A man was shot and killed by a Santa Fe County sheriff’s deputy during an encounter after the fatal stabbing of the man’s mother, the New Mexico State Police said.

The State Police identified the man killed Wednesday as 45-year-old Edward Daniel Santana and his mother as 67-year-old Delia Cervantes, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported.

When deputies responded to a reported domestic dispute at a home north of Santa Fe, they found the mortally wounded woman lying on a patio bench and they then had an encounter with Santana that led to the shooting, the State Police said.

State Police Officer Dusty Francisco said Santana was wielding a “fence type post” as a weapon as he aggressively approached deputies, prompting them to fire, first with a stun gun and then with a firearm.

Cervantes died at a hospital, the State Police said in a statement.
