Governor Grants Clemency to 12 Convicted of Drug, Property Crimes

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham granted executive clemency to a dozen New Mexicans convicted of mostly low-level, non-violent crimes.

All but one of the offenses dated back more than a decade; some dated back to the 1980s, according to a statement from the governor's spokesperson.

The latest issuance of executive clemency follows 19 pardons issued by Gov. Lujan Grisham in June 2020. Those had been the first pardons issued in the state since 2012, following almost a decade of neglect under the previous state administration. Five of those pardoned by Lujan Grisham had also applied for clemency under former Governor Susana Martinez.

The persons receiving clemency are:

• A man convicted of forgery
• A man convicted of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute
• A man convicted of burglary
• A woman convicted of possession with intent to distribute
• A woman convicted of auto burglary, credit card theft, possession of controlled substance, larceny, tampering with evidence, and identity theft
• A man convicted of fraud
• A woman and a man each convicted of trafficking controlled substance
• Three men and a woman each convicted of possession of a controlled substance

The governor's office provided The Paper with the names of each person receiving clemency but The Paper chose not to list their names since these executive actions clear them from association with criminal offenses.
