COUNTERPOINT Opens in May at N4th

North Fourth Art Center will host an opening reception on May 12, 5-8pm, for "Counterpoint: A juxtaposition of 'Semaphore' by Bruce Davis and 'Inside the Blue Studio'" by LaVerne Harper. 

"Semaphore" is a multi/mixed-media installation and "Inside the Blue Studio" is a selection of paintings and prints.  An ancillary exhibit in Gallery X features earlier works and the origins of the artists’ ideas for their respective shows. Overall, the juxtaposition of the 2D and 3D works of art offers the viewer a refreshing counterpoint of media and meaning.

In creating "Semaphore," a site-specific installation, architect and artists Bruce Davis draws upon his experience with raw and reclaimed construction materials to explore space and materials using lights, motors and sculptures that frame and activate the space. Typically a semaphore is an instrument with movement and light for conveying information by means of visual signals. “Every material in the universe—a tree, a piece of wood—projects a signal, a transmission," says Davis. “It is my goal to explore the potential and unlock the invisible secrets within each material.” The addition of light and sound inspired Davis to present the totality of the work in what he calls "Semaphore Transception Events" held in N4th Gallery on Wednesday, May 17, and Friday June 23, from 9-11pm.

LaVerne Harper's selection of paintings for "Inside the Blue Studio" pays homage to Matisse's "The Red Studio." Like Matisse, Harper gives a glimpse into the privacy of her studio and the paintings created therein through a daily practice she likens to a search for “self.” All the paintings-within-the-painting are included among her 35 works in the show—from large and small oil landscapes and cityscapes, to monotypes and prints—and all were created within the last five years. Harper is known for her evocative paintings and prints of the everyday iconography of Albuquerque and the surrounding area.
